Namaste from Periche Day 4

Today started at 8:00 am in Debuche with a view of Everst and Lhose.  We learned that the day before the main bridge that crosses the Dhuh Koshi River and leads up to Everest Base Camp had broken and fell hundreds of feet into the river.  Luckily no one died.  Our Sherpa guide worked with the local Sherpa people to plan a trail around the problem that enabled us to regain the main trail above Pangbuche. We followed the Sherpa […]

Dengboche

We are in Dengboche near Tengboche.  The suspension bridge broke yesterday and fell into the river below yesterday.  No one died, but this is a big problem because this was the primary route for our journey and now we need to find another way around.  It is actually a big deal for the whole area because all the trade in this area relies on this bridge for transporting goods.  We think we have a solution with an old Sherpa trail, […]

Update on Day 3

We just saw EVEREST in all it’s glory.  It was magnificent.  Like no other.  Truly the top wonder of the world. cmackin

Namche Bazaar Day 3

We are leaving Namche for Tengbuche today.  Unfortunately, we must first descend down about 1000 feet and then gain back 2000 feet to end up at 12500.  Namche has been fun.  It is very interesting to see how a completely remote village operates as the center of all Himalayan business and life.  It is even more amazing how they function with the hydroelectric plan offline for 3 months.  No running water.  No lights.  There is a constant stream of porters […]

Day 2

We just hiked to the top of a ridge line to get a chance to peek at the big peak, but the cloud base is only at about 14,000 feet.  We need it to be 15,000 feet higher.  We are all feeling really good today at 11,500 feet.  We are taking an acclimatization day here and plan to hike to Tengboche tomorrow. You can watch us make our trek under the Tracking map on this blog. cmackin

Namche Bazaar

They have made it to Namche Bazaar safely.  It is a lot colder then where they have been staying and there is no power.  You can track them on the tracking map. Patty cmackin

Preamble to Day One

Namaste from Ghat It is 6:00am on Tuesday and we are awake and getting ready for the first day of our trek to Everest.  We are super excited to start our journey and no longer is it just Kirsten and I on this trek, we have gathered a team now.  Kirsten and myself are joined by Michiela from Melbourne, Australia.  She will be hiking all the way to base camp with us.  For those who have read the other posts, […]

History

Approximately 550 years ago, three brothers lived in Tibet. Their father was a very powerful Lama (monk) in his monastery. The three brothers left Tibet in search of their own land to build monasteries and become powerful like their father. They settled in what later would be known as the Solu Khumbu district (Everest Region) in Nepal. There were no people settled in this area at that time. The oldest brother, Lama Sangwa Dorji, build his monastery in what is […]

Update from Ghat

We are still living in Ghat and making the daily trek up the steep trail to the monastery everyday. We have made friends with the monks and they are including us in their many activities.  It has been raining heavily everyday since my last post and it has limited the power and cell coverage available.  I made a website for the monks and updated it in Lukla.  The hike to Lukla is getting easier.  We are getting used to the […]

Namaste from Pemacholing Monastery

Post Image

Today we went to the Pemacholing Monastery for the first time. It is located about 1.5 hours up the trail and across the Dudh Koshi River on the side of the mountain. As we left the north end of Ghat we passed through prayer flag poles, that it is customary to always pass on the left side and spun the prayer wheels which it is customary to always spin as you pass by. The big man sizes wheels are located […]
