History

Approximately 550 years ago, three brothers lived in Tibet. Their father was a very powerful Lama (monk) in his monastery. The three brothers left Tibet in search of their own land to build monasteries and become powerful like their father. They settled in what later would be known as the Solu Khumbu district (Everest Region) in Nepal. There were no people settled in this area at that time. The oldest brother, Lama Sangwa Dorji, build his monastery in what is […]

Update from Ghat

We are still living in Ghat and making the daily trek up the steep trail to the monastery everyday. We have made friends with the monks and they are including us in their many activities.  It has been raining heavily everyday since my last post and it has limited the power and cell coverage available.  I made a website for the monks and updated it in Lukla.  The hike to Lukla is getting easier.  We are getting used to the […]

Namaste from Pemacholing Monastery

Post Image

Today we went to the Pemacholing Monastery for the first time. It is located about 1.5 hours up the trail and across the Dudh Koshi River on the side of the mountain. As we left the north end of Ghat we passed through prayer flag poles, that it is customary to always pass on the left side and spun the prayer wheels which it is customary to always spin as you pass by. The big man sizes wheels are located […]

Namaste from Lukla

Post Image

Today we journeyed from Kathmandu to Lukla. It was a relatively simple trip. We boarded a small twin engine prop plane for a 40 minute trip into the mountains of the Khumbu region. The Lukla airport is famous for being called the most dangerous airport in the world. It gets this designation because the runway was carved straight into the side of the mountain as opposed to parallel to the side of the mountain. Coming straight into the mountain on […]

KATHMANDU, NEPAL

Post Image

We landed in Kathmandu late at night from Guangzhou. We were met by our porter who took us to the youth hostel where we met and made fun friends from all over the world. Kirsten really had a great time talking with girls from the UK and Australia. In the morning we headed over to Tamil to do some shopping for items that we needed for our trekking. Driving in Nepal is similar to India. There are basically no rules. […]

GUANGZHOU, CHINA

Post Image

We landed in China today and had a 16 hour layover, so we managed to get a 72 hour VISA at immigration and a free hotel from the airline, so we took the opportunity to catch a train into the city. The last time I was in China was with my younger daughter, Lauren a few years ago. I got a nany to accompany us as we travelled in china. I forgot that the nanny was the reason why we […]

Mt. Everest Monk Monastery

Post Image

I will be traveling to the Khumbu region of Nepal at the base of Mt. Everest to volunteer in a monastery near Phakding with my 17 year old daughter from August to September 2013.  Girls are not allowed to spend the night in the monastery.  We will be living with a host family at the bottom of the steep hill that leads up to the monastery.    Each day we will hike 45 minutes up the hill to reach the young […]
